Updated: Jul 3
The Burwood Cricket Club was saddened to hear of the passing of Stephen De Niese, aged 74. Stephen was appointed Club Captain and Coach in 1980 after a successful playing career at Carlton Cricket Club.
He was a great leader and communicator and an outstanding left handed batsman. His record at Burwood in his 4 seasons with us was 1,412 runs at 42.78.
Stephen was also an excellent leg spin bowler and perfectly balanced fieldsman.
Stephen won Burwood’s batting and bowling averages for the First X1 and also the ESCA’s batting award.
He was also named in the ESCA Team of the Season for his batting.
Although Premiership success alluded Stephen at Burwood, he provided a pathway for many of our junior players to improve and make the Club a respected competitor.
Sincere condolensence to his wife, Marina, their children, Sean, Natasha and Brett, and their extended family.
